Before a business is listed, we review its public records, licensing where it applies, and public reviews. We don’t check insurance, bonding, or backgrounds, and we don’t inspect work.
When one can take the job, we introduce you.
You agree on the work and the price directly with the provider. Before work starts, ask for a written estimate and proof of insurance, as you would with anyone.
There is no cost to use Star Valley Guide to find and connect with a local service provider.
What good reviews don’t show you
You’re letting someone you’ve never met into your home. Most people choose from a search result and a rating. Those show what customers who chose to write a review said. They don’t show whether the company still legally exists, whether a required license is current, or whether a customer filed a complaint instead of writing a review.
Before a business is listed here, we look at the public record as a whole. Our first round of checks averaged about fifty separate public sources and searches per business.
- Whether the business is real and current
State business filings, and whether the name, address, and phone agree across its own site, government records, and its profiles. Our first round turned up a business with dozens of glowing reviews whose company the state had dissolved months earlier.
- Licensing, where it applies
Wyoming doesn’t license most home trades. Where a license is required, we check the issuing authority’s public record. Where none is required, we say so rather than count it against anyone.
- What customers actually wrote
We read the reviews themselves, including the negative ones and the owner’s replies, across sites, not only the number.
- Complaints and enforcement
Public complaint, consumer-protection, workplace-safety, and federal exclusion records, plus local news.
- Whether they’re really local
Where the business is based and where it actually works, from its own statements and public records.
We weigh all of it, a person reviews anything serious, and only a business that clears the bar is listed as a Verified Local Provider, with the date we checked. It’s the checking you’d do yourself if you had a free afternoon, done before you pick up the phone. It’s a starting point for your own decision, not a substitute for it.

What does “verified” mean?
That on a stated date the business cleared our review of the public record: state business filings, licensing where it applies, the reviews themselves, and public complaint and enforcement records. It isn’t an inspection of their work, and we don’t check insurance, bonding, or backgrounds. Think of it as the homework you’d do before hiring anyone, done before you call.
Why not just go by Google reviews?
Reviews are one signal, and we read them. But they only capture what customers chose to write. A customer in a dispute with a contractor usually isn’t leaving a review, and a company can keep a high rating after the state has dissolved it or its license has lapsed. We look at those records too.

Does Star Valley Guide do the work?
No. We introduce you to a local provider who can take the job. The business you hire does the work, sets its own prices, and is responsible for the job.

No. Star Valley Guide is an independent publication. We aren’t owned by, run by, or affiliated with any service provider. A business doesn’t pay to be verified, and payment never affects verification.
